How to Prepare for a Wax: What to Do Before Your Appointment

A great wax starts before you ever get on the table. A little preparation can help your waxer remove the hair more thoroughly, keep your skin happy, and give you the smoothest results possible.

Whether you’re coming in for your first Brazilian wax or you’ve been waxing for years, the basics are pretty simple: let your hair grow, gently exfoliate ahead of time, and arrive with clean, product-free skin.

At Revel Wax in Santa Clara, we’ll take care of the rest.

Let Your Hair Grow to About ¼ Inch

One of the most important things you can do before your wax is to give your hair enough time to grow.

Ideally, hair should be about ¼ inch long when you come in. If you’ve been shaving, that usually means putting down the razor for about two weeks before your appointment.

Wax needs enough hair to grip so it can remove it from the root. When the hair is too short, some of it may be left behind—even with great technique.

And resist the urge to trim before you come in. It’s surprisingly easy to trim the hair too short. When in doubt, leave it alone and let us handle it.

What if I shaved a few days ago?

Give it a little more time.

Hair that has just been shaved may not be long enough for the wax to grab. You may also have hairs growing at different lengths, particularly if you’re new to waxing. Waiting until you have enough growth helps us give you a smoother, more thorough result.

If you’re making the switch from shaving to waxing, don’t worry if everything isn’t perfectly synced during your first few appointments. Consistent waxing can help get your hair onto a more predictable growth cycle over time.

Gently Exfoliate 48 Hours Before Your Wax

A little exfoliation before your appointment can help remove dead skin sitting around the hair and prepare the area for waxing.

We recommend gently exfoliating about 48 hours before your appointment.

The key word is gently. This isn’t the time for aggressive scrubbing, harsh acids, or anything that leaves your skin feeling raw.

And skip exfoliating altogether on the day of your wax. Freshly exfoliated or irritated skin is not what we want under warm wax.

Think of it as prepping the skin—not stripping it.

Come With Clean, Dry Skin

If possible, arrive with clean, dry skin and no products on the area being waxed.

Before your appointment, skip things like:

  • Body oil

  • Heavy moisturizer

  • Deodorant on areas being waxed

  • Self-tanner or other topical body products on the area

Oils, lotions, and other products can create a barrier between the wax and your hair, making it more difficult for the wax to do its job.

Coming straight from work, school or somewhere else? Don't stress about it. We cleanse and properly prep your skin before every service.

Check Your Skincare Before Facial Waxing

This one is especially important if you’re having your brows, lip, chin, or another area of your face waxed.

Retinol, tretinoin, and other topical retinoids can make the skin more sensitive and potentially increase the risk of skin lifting during waxing. At Revel Wax, we recommend discontinuing topical retinoids on the area being waxed at least seven days before your appointment.

And retinoids aren't the only thing that can affect your skin.

Certain prescriptions, acne treatments, exfoliating acids, and other skincare products may change whether an area is safe to wax. Always tell your esthetician what you're using—even if you aren't sure whether it's relevant.

We'd much rather ask a few extra questions than wax skin that shouldn't be waxed.

Don't Try to Make Your Skin "Perfect" Before You Come In

You don't need to do anything elaborate before a wax.

You don't need perfectly exfoliated skin. You don't need to trim. And you definitely don't need to feel self-conscious about hair, bumps, ingrowns, or anything else happening with your skin.

That's what we're here for.

At Revel Wax, every appointment begins with a look at your skin and a quick consultation so we can determine the best way to approach your service.

What to Wear to Your Waxing Appointment

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is ideal, particularly for Brazilian, bikini, leg, or underarm waxing.

Your skin may be slightly sensitive immediately afterward, so tight leggings, restrictive underwear, or clothing that creates a lot of friction isn't always the best choice.

If you're coming in for a Brazilian or bikini wax, breathable, comfortable clothing makes the trip home a little easier on freshly waxed skin.

Preparing for Your First Brazilian Wax

If this is your first Brazilian, it's completely normal to have questions about what happens once you arrive.

You don't need to know how to position yourself or what you're supposed to do—we'll walk you through everything.

At Revel Wax, Brazilian waxing is performed in a private treatment room, and we'll explain positioning and what we're doing as we go. You can ask questions, talk through the entire appointment, or enjoy a quieter service.

Most importantly, don't shave because you're nervous about having too much hair. We promise: your waxer would much rather have enough hair to work with than not enough.

The Night Before Your Wax: Keep It Simple

There's no complicated pre-wax routine required.

Take your normal shower, avoid aggressively exfoliating or irritating the skin, and leave the hair alone. On the day of your appointment, keep the area clean and dry and skip unnecessary products.

That's really it.

Good preparation isn't about doing more to your skin. It's about giving us healthy, calm skin and enough hair to work with.
