Waxing Aftercare: How to Care for Your Skin Between Appointments

A great wax doesn’t end when you leave the studio. What you do at home can make a noticeable difference in how your skin looks and feels—and how well it’s prepared for your next appointment.

The good news? Waxing aftercare doesn’t need to be complicated. A few simple habits can help keep your skin hydrated, minimize irritation, and reduce the likelihood of ingrown hairs.

Here’s how to care for your skin after a wax and maintain your results between appointments.

The First 48 Hours After Your Wax

Freshly waxed skin can be more sensitive than usual, so give it a little time before jumping back into your normal routine.

For the first 48 hours, avoid excessive heat, sweating, and friction. That means skipping hot tubs, saunas, intense workouts, and very hot baths. After a Brazilian or bikini wax, loose, breathable clothing can also help minimize rubbing against freshly waxed skin.

Hold off on scrubs, exfoliating acids, and strongly fragranced products during this time as well. Your skin has just been waxed—it doesn’t need anything aggressive.

Wait Before You Exfoliate

Give your skin about three days after waxing before you begin exfoliating again.

After that, gently exfoliate the area two to three times per week. This helps clear away dead skin that can build up around the follicle and trap new hair beneath the surface.

The goal is regular, gentle exfoliation—not scrubbing as hard as possible. Over-exfoliating can irritate the skin and work against what you're trying to accomplish.

Use an Ingrown Hair Serum

If ingrown hairs are a concern, incorporate a quality ingrown hair serum into your at-home routine.

These products are formulated specifically for the issues that can develop as hair begins growing back after removal. Depending on the formula, they may contain ingredients that gently exfoliate, condition, or support the skin around the follicle.

Follow the directions for your particular serum, and remember that these products generally work best as part of a routine rather than something you reach for only after a bump appears.

At Revel Wax, we carry high-quality professional aftercare products in the studio, including products for clients who are prone to ingrown hairs. We can recommend the right option based on your skin and the area you're waxing.

Moisturize Your Skin Daily

Don't overlook hydration.

Keeping waxed skin moisturized helps maintain soft, healthy-looking skin as new hair grows in. Apply a gentle moisturizer daily, choosing a formula appropriate for the area and avoiding anything that consistently irritates your skin.

This is especially helpful on areas that tend to become dry or rough between appointments, including the legs, bikini area, and underarms.

Don't Pick at Ingrown Hairs

We know it's tempting.

If you notice a bump or hair beneath the skin, avoid digging at it with your fingers, nails, or tweezers. Picking can damage the surrounding skin and potentially lead to additional inflammation, discoloration, or scarring.

Instead, stick with your normal aftercare routine and give the hair an opportunity to reach the surface naturally. If you're dealing with frequent or stubborn ingrown hairs, bring it up at your next appointment so we can take a look and talk about your routine.

Skip the Razor Between Waxing Appointments

If you're committed to waxing, don't shave between appointments.

Shaving cuts hair at the surface rather than removing it from the root. It can also leave hairs growing at different lengths, which works against the more consistent growth pattern you're trying to establish through regular waxing.

Even if a few stragglers appear before your next appointment, leave them alone. We'll get them next time.

What About Tweezing?

Occasionally spotting one random hair isn't unusual, but routinely tweezing between appointments isn't ideal either.

Tweezing removes individual hairs from the root at different times, which can contribute to uneven regrowth. If you want to maintain a consistent waxing schedule, resist the urge to perfect the area between visits.

How Often Should You Wax?

For most clients, every four to six weeks is a good waxing schedule.

The exact timing depends on your individual hair growth and the area being waxed. If you're new to waxing or transitioning from shaving, you may initially notice hairs appearing at different times because they're in different stages of the growth cycle.

Keeping your appointments consistent gives us an opportunity to catch more of that growth over time.

What If You Miss a Few Appointments?

You don't have to start over.

After a longer break, you may simply have more hair or less even regrowth at your next appointment. There's no need to shave or do anything special beforehand. Let it grow and schedule your next wax when you're ready.

From there, return to your usual four-to-six-week schedule.

When Is a Reaction More Than Normal Post-Wax Sensitivity?

Some temporary pinkness or sensitivity can happen after waxing and generally settles as the skin calms down.

However, severe pain, blistering, significant swelling, a spreading rash, or symptoms that continue to worsen shouldn't simply be treated as normal post-wax irritation. Seek medical care if you're concerned about a significant reaction.

If you've experienced an unusual reaction after a previous wax or started using new medications or skincare products since your last appointment, let your esthetician know before your next service.

A Simple Routine Makes a Difference

You don't need a shelf full of products to take good care of waxed skin. Thoughtful aftercare and regular appointments are far more important than an overly complicated routine.

At Revel Wax in Santa Clara, we're just as focused on the health of your skin as we are on removing the hair. We'll talk you through aftercare and help you choose products that make sense for your skin instead of sending you home to figure it out yourself.
